I am hopeful that the video explains the why's and wherefores of this. It's a way many people used to teach bebop. And the arpeggios built on the third (m7b5), fifth (m7) and 7th° (M7) of such dominant seventh chord. I am pretty familiar with the dominant seventh bebop scale, in which all the chord tones fall on the downbeat with the addition of the added major seventh between the flat seven and the root. Is there not a guitar centric method book for building lines based on the Barry Harris method? For that matter, did Barry Harris' even formulate a method for single line improvisation that was built on or integrated in his harmonic method? Maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't exist.

There is no discussion about how to build lines over changes or how to improvise lines based on the Barry Harris harmonic method. There are a couple of pages about adding passing tones when descending a scale to make the chord tones on the down beat. "Talk Jazz" is only minimally about Barry Harris. It is odd to me that there isn't a similar guitar treatment of Barry Harris lines. For example, Alan Kingstone's book is excellent and very approachable. But it has been surprising that there aren't other resources by other educators familiar with the Barry Harris system. Youtube videos can be unfair, and the Workshop DVD's might be very different. It reminds me too much of the worst of my school teachers.

At worst it feels like he is deliberately rattling things off as fast and obtusely as he can so he can dismiss students who can't match instantly his lifetime of work. Second, as impressed as I am by the system I have not enjoyed the YouTubes I've seen of Barry Harris. I must watch my pennies closely, and $100 for a DVD causes pause. I've been reluctant to get the Workshop DVD's for two reasons.įirst, the cost. I feel there must be a similar transformation to be had studying lines that are somehow informed by this same system. My playing has been transformed by delving deep into the harmonic method as outlined by Alan, and to a lesser degree by Roni's "Chordability". I trust others will provide direct answers I'll hold off and leave them to it ('extra-note rules' are anathema to me), but I'll post if I can help.

It starts with scales - "scales come from chords" - and it's full of goodies about "creating movement" and "outlining key chord progressions", such as "running the four related dominant scales into each other", "scale into scale".īut listening to the accompanying CD of the Talk Jazz, I think the book presents and exemplifies very thoroughly. Looking at the contents now, I think the content of 'Chapter 1' ('Improvisation') of The Barry Harris Workshop Video Part 2 will satisfy your questions. By comparison, the latter's a bit dry - but that's almost inevitable given the different formats (not to mention the different personal styles). (I have worked with Alan's book, which I value as more than just a reference book.) I also bought Roni Ben Hur's Talk Jazz. I've watched them, but I haven't actually worked with them.

I've had both sets of DVDs for at least ten years.
